We are proud of Dr. Mohamed El Erian, ECN 57357 Advisory Board Member

Untitled-1“The one economic book you must read now . . . If you want to understand this bifurcated world and where it’s headed, there is no better interpreter than Mohamed El-Erian. . . . [ The Only Game in Town] is an excellent primer. . . . It’s also a guide on what to expect as the world struggles to cope with slower, less equal growth and the resulting populism, nationalism and ugly partisan politics that we see in countries from the U.S. to France to China.” Time

“El-Erian expertly offers a balanced view, commending the central banks for their necessarily aggressive policy views while noting, for example, the failure of the Fed to recognize the pre-crisis housing bubble. But title aside, this is hardly just a book about central banks. Instead, El-Erian offers a grand tour of the challenges we face, along with ideal solutions and more likely outcomes. . . . We desperately need a system in which the central banks are no longer the only game in town.”
—Steven Rattner, The New York Times Book Review

“What better moment could there be for a book subtitled ‘Central Banks, Instability, and Avoiding the Next Collapse’? And who better to write it than Mohamed El-Erian—the man who captured the essence of the present era of low growth, low inflation and low investment returns better than anyone else with his memorable concept of the ‘new normal’? . . . It is refreshing to read a policy book with the confidence to say that it is pointless to dispense elevator-pitch solutions to epochal economic challenges. . . . [A] sobering book.”
Financial Times

“El-Erian uses the bank as a backdrop for discussing the current crossroads he sees in the global economy and the role these institutions could play in shaping the future. . . . This easy-to-read discussion from a well-respected financial industry insider on the current state of the economy and the role of central banks will satisfy anyone who wants to learn about economics or the policy decisions that affect financial stability.”
—Library Journal

“Mohamed El-Erian has had an extraordinary career as an investment analyst, investor, and market commentator. His ‘new normal’ concept was prescient, provocative, and has proven out. Agree or disagree, his go-forward thoughts contained in this bracing book are well worth considering.”
—Lawrence H. Summers, former secretary of the U.S. Treasury

“
The Only Game in Town achieves the nearly impossible: It takes complex financial issues and events and makes them both enlightening and entertaining. It’s a must-read for anyone who cares about the global economy and its future, raising critical questions, exploring all the relevant topics, and offering sound policy recommendations. It’s a terrific book.” —Jack Welch

“
The Only Game in Town may well be the only book you need to read on how the global financial system works, the serious trouble we may be in, and what to do about it. El-Erian’s gift for clarity and his use of compelling examples make important economic issues accessible.” —Anne-Marie Slaughter, president and CEO, New America

“From the rise of Airbnb and disruptive technologies to worries about Russian foreign policy and turmoil in the Middle East to negative interest rates and ‘the new mediocre,’ the world is an increasingly confusing place. The job of policymakers is mind-bogglingly hard. Who better than Mohamed El-Erian, with his knowledge of markets, his knowledge of policy, and his brilliant mind, to help organize their (and our) thoughts.
The Only Game in Town is a great read.” —Olivier Blanchard, senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics

“Today’s global economy is beset by low growth and rising inequality. By looking at the tools now being used by the world’s major central banks, Mohamed El-Erian shows how we can instead promote inclusive economic growth. This is a must-read from one of the most astute financial analysts of our time.”
—Walter Isaacson, author of Steve Jobs

“Widely regarded as one of the most astute observers of global economic trends, Mohamed El-Erian is famous for having coined the now-ubiquitous phrase ‘the new normal.’ Five years ago, he was worried that the global economy might take years to regain its footing. Now El-Erian worries it could fall off a cliff.
The Only Game in Town is simply a must-read for anyone trying to understand how the global economy might unfold in the next five years.” —Kenneth Rogoff, Thomas D. Cabot Professor of Public Policy at Harvard University, and former chief economist and director of research at the International Monetary Fund

“Mohamed El-Erian knows the global economy as an investor, a public servant, and as an analyst with a rare ability to grasp its essentials. He has an urgent message to convey here: Central banks cannot continue to carry the global economy on their backs for much longer without a high risk of a very bad global outcome. If he’s right—as he has often been before—all of us, governments, business, finance, and individuals, need to understand why and how to take evasive action.”
—Jessica Mathews, former president, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace

“This book is a must-read for anyone interested in the global economy. It’s a masterful account of how central banks became the only game in town after the global financial crisis but also how other structural and fiscal policies are necessary to resolve key global economic issues. El-Erian is the best thinker on the key global issues of our times.”
—Nouriel Roubini, chairman, Roubini Global Economics, and professor of economics, Stern School of Business, NYU

“In his next book,
The Only Game in Town,Mohamed El-Erian has done several important things superbly. First, he has presented the first really comprehensive assessment of the multiple challenges to sustainable and inclusive growth facing a wide range of countries and the global economy. Second, he does it through the illuminating lens of central banks and monetary policy—with few exceptions, the only game in town. Third, he then deftly and insightfully dissects the limits and risks of this almost ubiquitous one-handed policy response. And fourth, he argues persuasively that this is a journey we cannot continue; that we will break either right to a much superior level and quality of growth, or left to declining performance and rising instability. He then suggests mind-sets that will help everyone—policymakers, and the rest of us—navigate in this complex and uncharted territory. It is a tour de force.” —Michael Spence, Nobel Laureate and professor of economics, Stern School of Business, NYU

“Mohamed El-Erian understands markets and economics, and he clearly and coolly articulates the forces that created the current global slowdown and the dangerous fork in the road that the world economy is approaching. The road ahead could lead to a perilous U-turn or more durable, inclusive growth. The good news, as El-Erian convincingly argues, is that policymakers, businesses, and the rest of us still have our collective hands firmly on the wheel, and can steer the economy in a better direction.”
—Alan Krueger, Bendheim Professor of Economics and Public Affairs, Princeton University

“An indispensable guide to understanding the rapid expansion and current role of central banks in the global economy, as well as the challenges and opportunities that they will confront in responding to future economic shocks.”
—James Poterba, professor of economics, MIT, and president and CEO, National Bureau of Economic Research

“
The Only Game in Town says it is about central banks, but it really is about so much more: everything from the investment strategy needed in today’s macroeconomic environment to the hard choices about taxes and public works that our politicians face to the economics underlying the still relevant ‘new normal’ (which he coined). El-Erian has an incredibly rich worldview, far greater than the sum of his impressive and diverse experience, and seeing today’s world economy through his eyes offers a real education.” —Dr. Adam S. Posen, president of the Peterson Institute for International Economics

“Illuminating . . . El-Erian charts the changing role of central banks in national economies and the global economy at large. . . . Central banks are experimenting, even making things up as they go along, in order to jump-start economies, for instance, by putting into place negative interest rates and other ‘unconventional monetary policies’ without any precedent or historical examples to follow. The natural result is instability from above and below.”

Product Description
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Dr. Mohamed A. El-Erian, one of the world’s most influential economic thinkers and the author of When Markets Collide, has written a roadmap to what lies ahead and the decisions we must make now to stave off the next global economic and financial crisis. Our current economic path is coming to an end. The signposts are all around us: sluggish growth, rising inequality, stubbornly high pockets of unemployment, and jittery financial markets, to name a few. Soon we will reach a fork in the road: One path leads to renewed growth, prosperity, and financial stability, the other to recession and market disorder.

In
The Only Game in Town, El-Erian casts his gaze toward the future of the global economy and markets, outlining the choices we face both individually and collectively in an era of economic uncertainty and financial insecurity. Beginning with their response to the 2008 global crisis, El-Erian explains how and why our central banks became the critical policy actors—and, most important, why they cannot continue is this role alone. They saved the financial system from collapse in 2008 and a multiyear economic depression, but lack the tools to enable a return to high inclusive growth and durable financial stability. The time has come for a policy handoff, from a prolonged period of monetary policy experimentation to a strategy that better targets what ails economies and distorts the financial sector—before we stumble into another crisis.

The future, critically, is not predestined. It is up to us to decide where we will go from here as households, investors, companies, and governments. Using a mix of insights from economics, finance, and behavioral science, this book gives us the tools we need to properly understand this turning point, prepare for it, and come out of it stronger. A comprehensive, controversial look at the realities of our global economy and markets,
The Only Game in Town is required reading for investors, policymakers, and anyone interested in the future.

Setting up the latest Micro array equipment in Egypt in 57357’s new genetic epidemiology center For the first time in Egypt, researchers are enabled to push forward gene targeting therapies in this part of the world

549A5382The first Micro array equipment in Egypt was received by 57357’s newly set -up Genetic Epidemiology Center of Excellence in October of 2015 and set up for operation in January 2016. The equipment is part of a L.E.10 million grant by the Science &Technology Development Fund (STDF) for the purchase of two major equipment for the setting up of a genetic epidemiology center of excellence, the” micro-array” and the “next-generation sequencer”. Both pieces of equipment will enable researchers to detect all mutations causing any given type of cancer in patients. The grant also covers the kits specific to Leukemia (ALL) which will be the starting cancer type under study by the department.

The long-awaited era of personalized gene-targeting treatment may finally start with childhood Leukemia patients at 57357. Researchers at 57357’s newly established Genetic Epidemiology Center of Excellence (GECE) would be able to screen their Leukemia (ALL) patients for genetic mutations associated with the disease, and use this information to choose the most effective treatments by targeting the altered genes.

So far, all genetic research studies have been done on American, European, and Asian populations. This will be the first time ever to carry out genome wide association studies for childhood Leukemia patients of Egyptian –African origin. In our previous collaboration with Harvard University on a certain type of brain tumor, research findings showed that we might have a different range of mutations than that found in North American population. Similarly, this research is pursuing to discover genetic causes of Leukemia in Egyptian population and in turn modify treatment methods where each patient will be treated according to his or her genetic make-up. With this genetic epidemiology unit, 57357 is also ushering in the Bioinformatics era, where training on data analysis and interpretation using high throughput instruments is widely needed.

Hospital 57357, the 320 bed largest pediatric oncology center worldwide, has along its 8 years of operations gained the trust of local and international scientific and research institutions including the Egyptian Ministry of Scientific Research’s STDF for its serious commitment to research which aims at improving patients’ care and increasing their chances of cure. The Hospital, which was able thus far to record over-all survival rates of 73% in the average, is dedicated to achieving world cure rate of 80% by the end of 2016, and beyond. To identify the unique genetic signature of cancer in Egyptian and Arab/ African children will lead to improved therapies and patients’ outcomes

57357 produces a new radioactive tracer instrumental in enhancing brain tumor diagnosis and surgery

hospitalA new radioactive tracer, Fluoro-Ethyl- Tyrosine (F-18 FET), is produced by the Nuclear medicine department. This new tracer will help in more precision in brain tumor imaging. As it is used in PET/CT imaging it provides additional information on the metabolic activity of the tumor, besides anatomical information on tumor size and localization. This radioactive tracer will make a difference in the actual diagnosis of brain tumors, facilitating the differentiation of benign from malignant tumors and the assessment of tumor grade. It will also help in differentiating recurrence of the tumor from post –operative gliosis or scarring. As for the actual brain tumor surgery, the new tracer will increase the precision in tumor delineation and target definition and will help in guiding surgery, biopsy, and radiotherapy based on additional information which is the metabolic activity of the tumor. Besides supplying the Hospital with their requirements of the new tracer, the 57357 cyclotron will be able to produce additional quantities and sell them as service surplus to other cancer centers as well.

To maximize patient outcomes and ensure quality of life after treatment

57357-157357 sets up a specialized clinic to follow-up on its increasing survivors

Established in June 2013 as a consequence of increasing survival rate (presently the average over-all survival rate at 57357 is 74.7%), the setting up of a survivor clinic was inevitable to enable the Hospital to fulfill its commitment towards maximizing the quality of life of its survivors after treatment.

Indeed it became a necessity to follow-up closely on patients who had successfully completed their treatment and are showing no signs of cancer two years thereafter. Physicians and families have become increasingly aware that cancer has huge repercussions on the quality of the patient’s life. In fact, survivors could be at risk of substantial morbidity and even mortality as a result of belated adverse effects of the treatment or the disease. These effects are diverse and could affect the cardiovascular, pulmonary, endocrine, or neurocognitive functions.

There is a general consensus that all survivors of childhood cancer should be followed up for life. Hence, the goal of 57357’s Survivor Clinic is to decrease the severity of late treatment complications so as to reduce excess morbidity or even mortality. Also, the clinic is working to keep families well informed and to find ways of prevention or reduction of adverse effects. The clinic team which meets once a week, includes two pediatric oncology clinicians, a pediatric nurse coordinator, a social worker, and a statistician. Recently with the visit of two eminent experts on survival issues, Peter E, Manley, MD and Christine Chordas, MSN, RN, CPNP, from Dana Farber Cancer Institute, and Boston Children’s, the 57357 team was able to exchange notes and experiences with the top experts in the field.

ECN Board President, Hisham Seify, and Board member, Dr Zach Reda, awarded Top Doctors in Orange County

image003It is with great joy and pride that we received the news of the recognition of Dr Hisham Seify, Diplomate of the American Board of Plastic Surgery & ECN board president and Dr. Zakaria Y. Reda, member of ECN’s Board, and board-certified in pediatric medicine, pediatric critical care, as top doctors of Orange County. We at 5357 are honored and privileged to share the joy with both of them over this exciting news.

On this special occasion, I had the chance to chat with Dr. El Seify , excerpts from the Interview:

What are the implications of this award and what does it entail?
The Castle Connelly organization and the US news collaborate each year to choose the top doctors and hospitals in the US. The list includes the top 1% and includes all specialties chosen by geographic areas. It was a great honor to be on this list for 4 years on a row since 2013. Dr Zach Reda a well know Pediatrician, intensivist and ECN board member was also awarded this year.

Tell us about your experience as an Egyptian American Physician in the U.S. Do you think the mix of your origins and present environment are the secret of your success?
There is no doubt that our upbringing in Egypt gave us the strength and tools to achieve our dreams in the US. The Egyptians professionals in the US are well respected and very successful. Many of them were exposed to both educational systems in Egypt and the US which made them exceptionally well trained. The first generation always has the challenge of proving itself and working hard to establish its presence in the society. ECN board has many prominent physicians that worked hard for many years to support the hospital ( Drs Sherif Abou El Naga, Mark Kieran, Hussein Abdel Dayem, Walid el Feky, Hesham Hamouda, Zach reda). ECN is very proud to have all of them.

ECN is a bridge between the U.S and Egypt in the global fight against cancer, as its Board President, how do you see this US based 501 C3 non-profit evolving in the future?
Since its inception, ECN was blessed with a great support from the Egyptian American community. 57357 is a unique organization that is second to none in a providing free cure from cancer. The story and mission of 57357 is heard loud and clear within the Arabic Americans and the academic institutions in the US. My dream is to introduce 57357 to the 322 million Americans. It is a success story that need to be told.

I also see ECN evolving into a large size nonprofit brokering the partnership between the US and Egypt in fighting cancer and advancing healthcare, education and the quality of life in the MENA region.

ECN is committed to supporting Hospital 57357’s future capacity expansion as well as its training and education needs, how did you receive the news of its imminent JCI accreditation?
The JCI accreditation was not a surprise to us as board members and supporters. We know first-hand the quality of the care and management of the hospital. The news will definitely reinforce the trust of the donors and supporters in this successful organization. Even in the US all large hospitals work hard to meet the requirement of the JACHO.
For me the more important observation was the pride that I saw in every one’s eye at the hospital or in Egypt in general when this news was announced. It tells me that this project became a national pride to all Egyptians!

Two Harvard Public Health Master’s Students complete successfully their practicum at 57357

57357-1

Thursday, Jan.21, 2016 marked the end of the three week internship program at Hospital 57357 of two Harvard University Master’s degree students in public health. Both north American students Omar El Mandouh and Nikeem Ugonabo , were given the opportunity to apply the knowledge they receive and complete their Harvard degree practicum requirements in a real world setting: tracking Hospital 57357’s process for new patients’ admission with the purpose of presenting their suggestions for improving patient flow and maximizing patient and family’s experience.

This internship program is one aspect of the collaboration between 57357 and Dana Farber Boston Children’s (DFBC) within the framework of the latter’s Global Health Initiative. Hospital 57357 welcomed to host the internship program as it is constantly in quest for quality improvement of its services. The 2 students were mentored by 57357’s quality department head, the first group of physicians training for the joint DFBC/5357 joint fellowship program, and the head of the nursing research unit. The two interns delivered 10 recommendations liable for further discussion to improve the existing admission process.

The results and recommendations presented by the two Interns would also constitute the basis for further debate and research in the light of existing constraints and challenges facing the Hospital.
“This internship is in fact my first introduction to the Middle East…… Truly, everybody was warm…It was a great environment for me and I want to thank each and every one who made this a unique experience for me” said Ugonabo when asked about her over-all experience in Egypt. As for El Mandouh, who is of Kuwaiti origins, he revealed: “Everybody was warm and helpful…. It was one of the best three weeks I had in a while….

All U.S. Global Health Initiative activities consist of continuous efforts to set up joint partnerships with healthcare centers in low- and middle-income countries and are focused around 3 objectives: program building, Education, and research. The Global Health Initiative (GHI) at Dana-Farber/Boston Children’s (teaching affiliates of Harvard Medical School) centers on developing outreach initiatives that improve outcomes and survival rates for children with cancer and blood disorders worldwide. The setting up of a joint fellowship training program with 57357 is another promising result of this initiative aiming at breeding a new generation of healthcare professionals on par with their counterparts in the U.S. to usher in change in healthcare delivery in the MENA region.

Words from the administration … New beginnings for the New Year

57357-1With only a few hours to go until we usher in the New Year 2016, one cannot help but reflect and meditate on this past year. To best describe 2015, the words recognition, renovation, revitalization, and resolution come to mind.

Indeed, this was the year of recognition. In January of 2015, we launched the new 60 bed extension inside the premises and named it after the late Ola Ghabbour. Since then, we have multiplied similar events to recognize our partners, donors, supporters, former founders, staff members. Whether to thank them for their contributions or in honor and appreciation of their achievements, creativity, and humanitarian spirit, we turned the Hospital into a meeting platform to reunite different sectors and people from all walks of life. You were not the least surprised to see at the auditorium a gathering celebrating the birthday of our dear friend, Harvard Neuro-oncology Professor, Dr. Mark Kieran, the visit of students of the Military Academy, and a special appearance by ‘Spiderman’ enchanting and brightening the lives of the children

In terms of renovation, we have a new website, a new Hospital CEO, COO, and new Heads for quality, infection control, and human resources. We now display a new institutional structure whereby all our affiliates: Hospital, Foundation, AFNCI, ECN, are bound together as the 57357 working Group.  Hospital management is carried out through a board of trustees, a board executive committee, and a 57357 Working Group Board.   We also launched a new 2020 strategy that is translated into goals and key strategic indicators. These in turn are being cascaded all across the Institution and linked to performance through departmental KPI’s.

As for revitalization, we gave all our support to our first group of the joint 57357/ DFBC pediatric oncology fellowship students. We offered them the fruit of our knowledge, the time and space to maximize their learning experience. They represent 57357’s new blood, the future generation of pediatric oncologists and researchers who will usher in a new era in healthcare in Egypt and the surrounding region. Furthermore, just before the end of this year, we witnessed the enrollment of the second group of students in the fellowship program-among them a Kenyan national and an Ethiopian national. We look forward with great excitement to the start of construction of our mega expansion project, the Health Sciences Campus including a Training Academy and a new 300 bed tower for which the architectural design has been completed.

But most importantly, we have been attentive to the needs and concerns of our present staff, they are the backbone of the entire Hospital operations. All through the past year, we have pursued to enhance their capabilities and personal advancement as well as provide them with the adequate tools and resources. The latest Intra-operative MRI, PACS radiology system, and linear accelerators are among our latest acquisitions. A new clinical pharmacy fellowship with the University of Maryland and MBA’s and Masters of Healthcare Management from the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport will soon be made available.

Armed with all of the above, the advent of the New Year fills us with hope and a long list of resolutions. We pledge to enhance the level of communication among us, we need to see and feel that we are all working and aligning our efforts to achieve the same mission. We will seek to bridge the gap between theory and practice, putting this mission into action. We will focus on conducting research at all levels of the Institution; we know that it is instrumental in taking 57357 to a higher level. We pledge to minimize waste and protect our resources, this is the ultimate sign of maturity and credibility. We pledge that by 2016 we will increase our average over-all survival rates from 73.2% to 80%. In doing and promising all of the above, we will never forget to focus on what matters most, on the why we are doing it: our children with cancer.

Have a happy and blessed New Year!

Guezira Club Youth Came To Visit and to cheer up Our 57357 patients

604A7413-editedA cooperation protocol to seal the support of Guezira Sporting Club to 57357 is officially signed
Last Saturday, Dec.5, 2014 a large Guezira club delegation composed of members the board of directors including Club President, Maj. general Hussein Massoud, Secretary General, Maj. General Assem Abass, and Mrs. Iman El Zayady, board member, the members, and their youth and children came loaded with gifts to spend some time with the children.
Among the guests were a large number of children with special needs who had won sports medals this year. They were lovingly welcomed with flowers at the entrance by some of our patients and guided to the Auditorium where they listened for the first time to the story of the establishment of the Hospital. Indeed, for the majority of them, this was actually the first visit to Hospital 57357. During the welcoming session, both Guezirza Club and 57357‘s top Management expressed their earnest desire to establish strong solidarity ties between the two institutions. The two parties voiced their will to nurture a relationship which is based on mutual support and encouragement, realizing its inevitability for the growth and progress of Egypt and its future generation.

The Guezira club visit falls within the Club community’s commitment to social responsibility. As such they have chosen Hospital 57357 to be the recipient of an annual donation collected at the time of membership renewal. But most importantly, they have come together with their sports medal winning players, among whom where a large number of children with special needs, to encourage and lift up the spirits of the children with cancer. The message that the Club’s Secretary General wanted to share with the club’s youth was the following: Somewhere outside the club community, there are children who are suffering from a dreadful disease and are fighting for their lives.
In his address to the audience, Hospital CEO, Dr. Abouelnaga highlighted the need that different communities in the Society must come together to support each other. In turn, he listed the different channels of support, other than monetary donations, in which the members could engage such as volunteering time with the patients and their families. He stressed how the Hospital in turn could give back to the Club community in terms of spreading awareness about cancer and healthy living guidelines for prevention.

At the end of their visit to the children in the day-care and the in-patient section, our guests shared how much they were impressed and touched by their visit. They regretted having waited so long to come and visit. I chatted a bit with some of the medalists: Said Mohamed Mahrous, bronze medal in Swimming, Salma el Hossainy, bronze and gold in Swimming, Hatem Abdel Akhar, top African, Arab and National Judo player, ranked 6th worldwide, Farida Abdel Moneim, bronze medal in swimming, and Ali Hassan Eid, ranked 6th on the National level in diving who declared he was the first enrolling Guezira Club volunteer at 57357!

A demonstration of love and support to Egypt by 57357 and its patients in unison with all Egyptians 57357’s children, families, and Staff spend a week-end in Sharm to support injured Tourism

57357’s children, families, and Staff spend a week-end in Sharm to support injured Tourism

With a heightened sense of patriotism, 57357’s administration organized a week-end trip to Sharm including patients and families as well as Hospital staff. The trip is an expression of 57357’s support to the coastal town of Sharm el Sheikh which is witnessing a decline in number of tourists since the recent Russian plane incident. Major general Khaled Foda, South Sinai Governor welcomed the children in person and promised to pay them a visit at the Hospital in Cairo. He invited them to spend a whole day at the Sharm El Sheikh naval club and visited them at their Hotel in Sharm, bringing along gifts and toys.

The 57357 visiting group included Dr. Amro Ezzat Salama, 57357’s Board of trustees President, and Dr. Sherif Abou El Naga, the Hospital’s CEO. All 57357 visitors bore the cost of the trip except 57357’s patients who were offered by the Hospital the opportunity to visit Sharm free of charge. More importantly, the children were given the chance to take part in a noble initiative which pursued to demonstrate solidarity to the Nation and particularly the town of Sharm El Sheikh which is particularly hit because of the drop of touristic activity.
