Thanks to Egypt Cancer Network Donors’ support: 57357’s new capacity expansion project is restoring hope in cure for an additional 50% of annual pediatric cancer cases in Egypt.

Start of  Construction of the new complex, expected in 2014, is to boost job opportunities and economic activity.

UnknownOn the third week of May 18-21, 2014, a delegation from RTKL, the global architecture firm carrying out the design of 57357’s expansion, was again at the Hospital premises for another fine tuning of information and data before coming up with the final  design specificities of Hospital 57357’s expansion complex. The new complex made of several buildings will , beside the actual premises, house a 300- 350 bed in-patient tower, a health sciences training Academy, a research institute, and a new kind of radio therapy in Egypt much less invasive than the traditional one, the proton therapy. Carrying out this huge expansion will , besides enabling the provision of quality cancer care to an increased number of cancer patients, result in a stimulus injection to economic activity and job opportunity creation in Egypt. The new complex will first and foremost allow the hospital to cater to an additional 50% of  annual pediatric cancer patients over and above the present 25% it is able to accommodate. Also, for its construction, the expansion complex will potentially employ 15000workers of various levels of expertise in all fields of construction and engineering. Moreover, 3000 healthcare professionals of all levels and fields will be working at the new extension, proton therapy, and research institute units. As for the Training Academy, it will be accrediting around 4000 graduates annually.

“ We have now a rough idea about the concept design” reveals Eng. Hisham Dinana, VP of Solving EFESO Egypt, who acts as  the project manager. Dinana added that it is not implausible that starting on the foundations of the in-patient 300 bed tower would take place in 2014 and that the construction of the entire tower would be completed 4 years later. “ we are on schedule and we are making good progress” he explained, RTKL having  finalized during a preceding visit the “space program” for the design. In other words, the architectural firm delegation has assessed with each and every hospital department what their needs, expectations and requirements are in terms of space and energy requirements with respect to the future expansion.

Moreover, an expert from Solving EFESO collected relevant data about secured.onlinegambling2014.com the climate conditions at the expansion site: sun, wind, air quality, temperature beneath the surface. All of this would be instrumental in selecting the right mix for energy generation and conservation. “One ingredient of the mix will most definitely be solar energy”, reveals Dinana.“As for other ingredients of the mix, other sources such as natural gas, or methane are also under consideration,” he added.

Previously, thanks to Egypt Cancer Network’s firm belief in the worthiness and inevitability of this important expansion, the U.S. based non-profit network initially agreed to fund the architectural design of 57357’s new Health and Sciences Complex. Presently, because of the increase in demand for its free quality services resulting in overstretched capacity, the Hospital is turning away 5 out of 7 patients that daily knock at its doors.

After their visit to 57357’s premises: Two Egyptian American pain management specialists, Dr Joseph Ibrahim and Dr. Emad Attallah pledge ongoing support and express faith in a brighter future for Egypt and its children with cancer

Screen-Shot-2014-04-29-at-9.41.45-AM1Dr. Joseph Ibrahim is a consultant in vertebral column and back pain treatment and care in New Jersey. At a Coptic churches event in New Jersey, he met with Hospital 57357’s VP and was acquainted with Hospital 57357’s action in providing free quality care for Egyptian children with cancer. Touched by the work of this charitable institution, he made a contribution through its u.S. affiliate, Egypt Cancer Network, and promised to visit the Hospital during his next home visit. As promised, he came to the hospital in the first days of April, gave a lecture on back pain management and toured the different departments. In an e-mail to the Hospital VP, he shared his impressions about the Hospital: “I met with the staff physicians who are very dedicated, compassionate, and motivated to keep up with up to date information. The pharmacy department is one of a kind. The radiology department is a state of the art facility. I was impressed by the cleanliness. I saw the children in the playroom in a very good spirit. I also met with a teacher coming to give classes to in-patients so that they do not miss on their school classes. In summary in 57357 I saw the Egypt that we all are hoping to see as this is the model that if applied will bring back Egypt to the top of the world.

Previously in February, Hospital 57357 had received another Egyptian American pain management specialist, Dr Emad Attallah, Instructor, Boston Children’s Hospital Pain Program, and Harvard Medical School. He came as part of a Dana Farber/ Children’s Hospital Boston delegation of eminent U.S. pediatric oncology professionals responsible of the selection of final candidates for the newly instituted joint pediatric oncology fellowship. As this was Dr.Attalah’s first visit to Hospital57357, he could not but demonstrate his enthusiasm and excitement over all what has been accomplished at Hospital 57357. He expressed his pride in 57357 and said that it is on par with U.S. Hospitals and pledged to support it in every possible way.

On March 30, under the auspices of His Holiness Pope Twadros II, the Egyptian Americans community in Fairfax, Virginia held a luncheon to support Egypt Cancer Network 57357.

Held in St. Mark’s Church in Fairfax, the sold out event was a testimony to  this community’s fervent desire to give back to their mother country, Egypt, through the support  of Hospital 57357’s children with cancer.  The Luncheon was coordinated by  Father Bishoi Andros, leader of the Coptic community in the area and Father Bolous, Pope Tawadros II’s special envoy who  has a lasting relationship with and strong dedication to 57357.  The event was attended by His Excellency Mohamed Tawfik, the Ambassador of Egypt to the United States, as well as General Consul, Mr. Hani Nagi and a crowd  of distinguished members of Virginia’s Coptic community.   Ambassador Tawfik  gave a moving speech in which he affirmed his faith in a brighter future for Egypt, invited people to remember the less fortunate, and praised ECN 57357’s action of supporting cancer patients in Egypt.

Highlights of the event were Radiation Oncology Expert, Dr. Sherif Yacoub’s speech and  Hospital 57357’s VP,Dr. Sherif Abou EL naga’s presentation. Dr. Yacoub praised Hospital 57357’s action and achievements in a relatively short period and pledged his and a group of colleagues’ participation in its future expansion plans through donating time and effort for the setting up of its future proton therapy unit.

As for Dr. Abou El Naga’s presentation, he focused on the history of the hospital and its future expansion projects. As he raised awareness about 57357 in the room for the first time within this community, the prevailing atmosphere among the audience was one of awe and encouragement.  Abouelnaga talked about a new 300 bed in-patient tower  to increase Hospital 57357’s present capacity, as  every 4 out of 5 children with cancer are denied access to 57357’s free quality care because of increased demand . He also talked about the Health Science Academy and training of all staff categories including doctors, nurses to be always up to the latest standards of patient care. Words of gratitude and appreciation are in order to all initiators, organizers and attendees of this special event which brought Egypt closer to  so many Egyptian Americans who carry our beloved Homeland in their hearts and who are always willing to be at its service. At the end many people presented their donations. However, the most heartwarming part was when the children came up to Dr. Abouelnaga and donated their own allowance for the week.

3 year old girl Malak says “thank you” to every donor who contributed to her survival

With your support, Malak, a two months baby with a tumor half her weight, is recovered from kidney cancer

MalakAt 2 months of age, Malak weighed a mere 4 kg. Half of this weight was a tumor located on her adrenal gland. She was horribly weak when admitted to 57357 , accompanied by her distraught mother, who held great fears of losing her.

Now, Malak is a vibrant 3 year old child who never seems to stop playing. Her mom has regained her serenity and happiness.

Malak’s treating physician, Dr Emad Mousa reveals: “To treat babies who are just a few months old, we follow a very cautious protocol so as to not affect her/his small organs. Thus, we first provided Malak with 3 simple chemo doses followed by another 3 doses after the surgery. The latter  was the most critical step on her road to recovery.”

“When Malak was only 6 months old I remember waiting, with a trembling heart, forabout 10 hours until she completed the surgery to remove the tumor.  I am thankful for the physicians and nurses for their dedication to save the children with cancer, now my daughter is cancer-free”,  Malak’s mom exclaimed. “Thanks also to the many donors, as we have never been asked to pay a single coin towards the expensive treatment costs“, she added.

Thank you to all our donors whose support enables us to provide Malak and many other children with unique quality care for free. With your support, 72 % of the children admitted at 57357 are cured. But there are still many children who lose their chances of cure, because of the Hospital’s present over-loaded capacity. Keep supporting us, so that we could bring to completionour ambitiouscapacity expansion program, the 300-bed in-patient tower, the health and sciences training Academy, the Research Institute and the proton therapy.

Thanks to ECN’s Supporters: 57357’s 18 months Blended Learning Program kicks off on schedule

604A813157357’s new staff learning and development program was launched on January 20, 2014. Through this program, some 2000 workers and healthcare professionals of three 57357 affiliated institutions CCHE, CCHF, and AFNCI will be receiving benchmark practical academic knowledge via the blended and targeted training approach. This will result in improved delivery of healthcare services, new possibilities for career enhancement, and the birth of a new generation of healthcare professionals positively impacting this industry as a whole. “Blended training”, is a form of knowledge acquisition which is carried out through E-learning and workshops led by facilitators.

A new Learning Management System (LMS) has been implemented to ensure ease of use and accessibility to hundreds of E-learning courses. The new LMS has been installed with a public IP so employees can access training from outside work.

Training needs assessment has been carried out for the three affiliates’ employees to include core competencies courses (3) to be taken by all staff, 2 managerial courses for staff at the managerial level, and 3 functional courses specific to each and every department. Competencies were mapped to courses. All core and managerial courses have been uploaded on the LMS. Functional courses have yet to be uploaded according to department needs. All core competencies courses have to be completed by May 30, 2014. All managerial courses are set to start on Nov.1, 2014 and functional courses to start on July 1, 2014.

A first phase pilot group of 186 employees were successfully logged in to their core competencies courses on March 4, 2014 and took their examinations in April. All exams are accredited by the University of Georgia. The rest of the staff were divided into 4 groups and were logged in over the period from March 20 to April 10.

Previously, on the occasion of the launch of the program last January, Dr.Hesham El Seify, ECN Board chairman had affirmed ECN’s full support to it “It is a great honor and privilege for ECN to be sharing in the support of this program..  We look forward to helping Hospital 57357 to develop from a healthcare center into a world leading competitive Health and Sciences Campus.”

57357 selected as partner center for Harvard Medical School's PPCR on line course

Committed to the advance of research, 57357 is the first center in Africa for the course’s promotion and administration.

Principles and Practices of Clinical Research will be promoted and coordinated in Egypt by 57357, which has signed an agreement to that effect in 2014 with PPCR. The course duration is 8 months, beginning at the end of February 2014. Through 57357, applicants pay a reduced price totaling $3250, which includes registration fees to Harvard Medical School and administrative fees to 57357. Taught online by Harvard faculty since 2008, the course includes the following subjects: basics and ethics of clinical research, protocol design for clinical trials, data collection, statistics, study results reporting, publishing and grant writing.  For 2014, the Hospital is funding 24 of its staff participants: 11 physicians, 4 clinical pharmacists, 2 nurses, and 7 researchers.

Also 57357 will provide other educational content to participants at the 57357 site. Besides benefiting from the reduction in price, students who apply to the course through 57357 will take the course in one year as they will have the opportunity to put into practice what they have received, through their participation in workshops led by facilitators.

The course will in this case be tailored to conform to the favored blended-learning technique in training. Moreover, students will not only be acquiring knowledge and skills through e-learning  and workshops (informative learning), but they will also be taught in such a way as to socialize them around values (formative learning) and to develop their leadership attributes so as to prepare them to be enlightened change agents (transformative learning).
